Gulfport welcomes President Ford
President Gerald Ford campaigns in September for the 1976 presidency in Gulfport, Mississippi. Ford would be defeated in November by one-term Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter.
Gaffes like declaring in a debate with Carter that “There is no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe” contributed to his loss. Lukewarm support for Ford and Carter’s relatively low profile on the national stage resulted in the lowest voter turnout in 30 years.
